Our Church History
Brown Creek Baptist Church was organized in 1828 with the assistance of Rocky River Baptist Church. Elder Ralf Freeman, a former slave and highly respected Christian, was one of the organizers. Elder Freeman guided the early development of what was called Brown Creek Baptist Church of Christ. The first meeting was held on the waters of Brown Creek. Twenty people, both black and white, attended the first service held on Saturday, June 27, 1828. By 1848 the membership had grown to 81. Brown Creek followed the leadership of Rocky River and assisted in the organization of First Baptist Church of Wadesboro in 1847 and Polkton Baptist Church in 1853.
Brown Creek was destroyed by a cyclone on February 19, 1884. It was rebuilt in 1888-1889. The church moved to its present-day location and added Sunday School classrooms in 1920. In 1930 the congregation had grown to 160. In 1946-1947, the church building was brick veneered and the sanctuary remodeled. During the night of December 8, 1961, the church was destroyed by fire. Services were held at the Brown Creek Community Building until a new building was completed in 1963. In 1981 additional Sunday School classrooms and a fellowship hall were added. A larger sanctuary was added in 1997.
Today's members have been blessed by a history of dedicated Christians that have served the Lord faithfully in this community for generations.
